Website of the Month : The Network of Public Health Observatories

The Network of Public Health Observatories (PHOs) website presents information, data and intelligence on people’s health.  The site is useful to anyone who needs comparative data on national or local health profiles – for business cases, commissioning services, audit or research.

Newly added to the site are the latest 2012 Health Profiles which provide a snapshot of information about the health of people in various District Authorities, or by County.  You can search by place or postcode to get a summary of health information and priorities for public health in any particular area.

For example it may interest you to know that Bournemouth has a higher than national average rate of hospital stays for self-harm and drug misuse whereas Christchurch has a worse than average rate of smoking in pregnancy and Poole has a higher than average incidence rate of malignant melanoma

The site also contains links to PHO publications including a technical briefings series and profiles on specific health areas such as end of life care, teeenage pregnancy, injury, community mental health and prevalence of diseases.
