Dr David Pencheon, OBE, Director of NHS/Public Health England Sustainable Development Unit will deliver the 19th Whitney Memorial Lecture this evening at Poole Hospital entitled “Towards an environmentally, financially and socially sustainable NHS – head in the sand, or line in the sand?”

This summary provides the main findings from literature search results  around sustainability and environmental policy in connection with the NHS.  It describes many case studies which all indicate the significant savings that can be realised from adopting energy performance contracts and utilising smart specifications for NHS Estate – savings that in one case would be the equivalent to boiling 3.34 billion cups of tea a year.
