Berwick Report published 6th August 2013

Following the Francis Report into the breakdown of patient care at Mid Staffordshire Hospitals, the Prime Minister commissioned Professor Don Berwick, leading expert in patient safety, to review patient safety across the NHS done “to make zero harm a reality in our NHS”.

The Berwick Report into NHS patient safety A promise to learn – a commitment to act has identified a number of existing problems, and makes recommendations to the NHS, its regulators and the government to build a nationwide system for patient safety through transparency, openness and continual learning with patients firmly at its heart.

Among its ten recommendations covering areas such as capacity building, training, transparency, patient and carer involvement, measurement and regualation there is also a key statement in the executive statement:

The most important single change in the NHS in response to this report would be for it to become, more than ever before, a system devoted to continual learning and improvement of patient care, top to bottom and end to end.
