Can NHS Hospitals do more with less?

A major new review into the evidence on hospital efficiency has been produced by the Nuffield Trust:

Can NHS Hospitals do more with less?

The study is based on a review of British and international literature and interviews with senior managers and clinicians in six hospital trusts which, following financial difficulties, have improved their performance.

An accompanying summary explores the implications of the findings for policy and practice in the context of the Government’s NHS reforms.

This report forms part of a Nuffield Trust research programme: The quest for efficiency in the English NHS, which is setting out practical recommendations for managers, clinicians and policy-makers on how the NHS can improve productivity. More information about this work, including related publications in the series, can be accessed from the dedicated projects page.
