Using the Evidence

In moments of procrastination, have you ever pondered on the origin of the Cochrane Library logo?  Apparently it’s based on error bars from prenatal steroid trials in the mid-1970s.  Despite research in the late 1960s which showed the benefits of steroids in saving the lives of premature babies, it took 20 years for the practice to be accepted.  This Changing Medical Practice article, from Wellcome News 2004, tells the tale and considers issues around getting evidence into practice and the role of meta-analysis and systematic reviews.  Food for thought!
